The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that nicotine is the most common form of chemical addiction in the United States. Nicotine is a highly dependent drug and millions of people have tried to quit the habit.

Nicotine use is harmful to one’s health and withdrawal symptoms can include irritability and anxiety. There are some alternative medicines used in traditional medicine to ease withdrawal symptoms from a nicotine addiction.

Using Marshmallow as an Alternative Medicine for Nicotine Addiction

Taking marshmallow in either the liquid (tea) form or capsules can help ease cravings. This herb flushes out toxins in the body and can be taken two – three times per day.

Although there are no reported side effects, marshmallow does coat the stomach and it can decrease absorption of other substances. Marshmallow is not to be taken for more than two weeks at a time.

Peppermint to Ease Headaches and Calm Nerves from Nicotine Withdrawal

Drinking peppermint tea when trying to overcome a nicotine addiction can help ease withdrawal headaches, boost circulation and calm nerves. Peppermint is considered to be a detoxifying agent and helps rid the body of impurities.

Peppermint when taken in small doses by adults is generally deemed to be safe. Possible side effects related to use of peppermint are allergic reactions and heartburn.

Ginseng to Cope with Withdrawal Symptoms from Nicotine Addiction

Traditional medicine uses ginseng to cope with withdrawal symptoms for drug abuse. According to the National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine, ginseng is used to promote feelings of well-being and balance. It is also used to help people overcome their illnesses by improving their general health.

Ginseng side effects most commonly reported are headache, gastrointestinal and sleep disturbances. Other side effects have been reported and it is recommended by some sources to limit use of ginseng to three months.

Fight Nicotine Addiction with Alternative Medicines

There are many more herbal medicines designed to help ease withdrawal symptoms that are produced when fighting a nicotine dependence. Marshmallow, peppermint and ginseng are just three of the many alternative medicines available.

Nicotine addictions affect individuals differently and may require a variety of alternative medicines to deal with the withdrawal symptoms and to help overcome the addiction.
