Natural Remedies and Treatments for Eczema

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, between 10 and 20 percent of people suffer from eczema world-wide. It is common to see eczema development in early childhood and there are many factors that contribute to eczema. Often it will persist into adulthood, flaring up under certain circumstances.

Signs and Symptoms of Eczema in Babies, Children and Adults

This condition goes under various names such as dermatitis, atopic dermatitis and the most popular name: Eczema. Signs and symptoms vary for each individual but often it is noticeable by a red rash that is itchy and painful. It can crack the skin, bleed and become infected.

Baby Eczema

Babies as young as 2-3 months can suffer from eczema. Often you will notice a rash that suddenly appears and does not disappear. The skin may be dry, scaly and itchy. It can form on the face, especially on the cheeks.Baby eczema can bubble up, ooze and week fluid. This intense rash can make baby fussy and interfere with sleeping at times. When the rash is open it can also allow skin infection to occur.

Childhood Eczema

Between the ages of 2 and puberty, children can display signs of eczema as well. For children the rash often appears on the inside of the elbows and backs of knees. It can also appear on the neck, wrists, ankles and creases between the buttock and legs.

An eczema rash in children will be red and scaly, itchy and painful. As the rash persists, it can turn the skin leathery and result in permanent looking goose-bumps. The skin area may also be lighter or darker than other unaffected areas.

Adult Eczema

Eczema for adults is mainly the same as for children. It can affect adults anywhere on the body.

Treating Eczema Naturally

There are many treatments for eczema and while doctors often prescribe cortisone creams, it is not usually their first choice in treatments. More and more natural treatments are hitting the markets and it's a good idea to practice prevention as well as natural topical solutions.

Allergies to certain things can trigger eczema flare-ups. This could be an allergy to any of the following: Food, pets, grasses, trees, clothing, perfumes, fragrances, chemicals or a variety of other things. You should use a notebook to record when flare-ups occur to try to determine what caused the flare-up. By taking natural anti-histamines you may be able to keep allergies at bay and reduce eczema outbreaks.

Chemicals in Products

One of the most common triggers for eczema and rashes are chemicals in everyday products. Synthetic chemicals and even some naturally-derived ingredients can irritate the skin and break down the skin's natural defenses. Ingredients like SLS, SLES, Coco-Betaine, Fragrances, Parabens, and Oxybenzone can have an impact on the skin.

By avoiding these and other synthetic chemicals you can help the skin maintain it's balance and improve the overall health needed to keep eczema rashes to a minimum. When searching for natural products, be sure there are no ingredients called SLS, SLES, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, as those ingredients are naturally-derived but still cause irritation to the skin.

Using Natural Products to Treat Eczema

One of the best creams I found is the Pure Anada Organic Shea Butter which is an unrefined Shea Butter. Shea Butter is often used to treat skin rashes and improve the health of the skin. By using this cream you are moisturizing the area and helping the skin fight off any infections.

You can find a list of useful products under our Sensitive Skin category on the left.

I often urge customers to look carefully at the personal care products they are using for themselves and on their kids. Using an eczema cream is ok but if you are still using shampoos and soaps that contain irritating  chemicals, you aren't really solving the problem.

My kids and myself use only natural products that have no irritating synthetic chemicals in them. Having a history myself of eczema and seeing both kids also have it, we keep our flare-ups to a bare minimum by using only natural products. On ocassion, when traveling Butter from Pure Anada and it resolves within days. When we can avoid synthetic chemicals, our skin is fine and eczema-free.
